Residency and fellowship training is an exciting and challenging phase of the education of physicians; during this period, clinical skills and professional identity are developed and refined. Rush University Medical Center is committed to maintaining excellence in our graduate medical education programs and to providing our housestaff an environment conducive to outstanding clinical experience, expert teaching and personal well-being. At Rush, we are very proud of our house officers and consider them a vital part of our health care community and our medical college faculty.

Graduate Medical Education Office (GME) is responsible for the tracking, documentation, licensure, orientation, payroll, benefits and verification for more than 640 Rush housestaff (residents and fellows) each year. The GME staff assists and supports Rush Housestaff in their hectic lives, keeping them informed of Rush requirements, changes, and any graduate medical education and human resources issues and policies that affect them.

The GME office coordinates information with over 75 academic training programs through a system of program coordinators who represent each program. The GME office serves as the principal liaison between the active Rush Housestaff Association and Medical Center management, and is an advocate and resource for all housestaff.

GME supports accreditation of programs by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and other Boards, and functions as the liaison between the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation - IDFPR and many other outside agencies.
